Fishing South Padre and the Lower Laguna

The Lower Laguna is one of only a handful of hypersaline lagoons on earth. It is shallow, bright and relentlessly sunny, and it sits far enough south that the UV index runs high into October. Salt dries on everything, including you.

What to wear

UPF 50+ is the baseline, not the upgrade. Salt is hard on fabric, so a shirt that holds its rating through repeated washes is worth more here than one that tests well new.

When to go

Year round, with the best flats fishing from spring into early summer. Snook and tarpon show up when the water warms. Winter is mild enough that a long sleeve alone is often plenty.
