The water
Fishing Louisiana
Louisiana is a maze. Miles of cane, cuts and dead-end ponds, long runs between spots and almost no shade the entire time. The fish run big enough that a fight can last long enough to sunburn the back of your neck while you are busy.

The reading
What to wear
A hood and a high collar. Long runs at speed and long fights in the open both punish exposed skin, and the marsh means bugs as well as sun. Fabric that moves when you are leaned into a bull red matters.
The season
When to go
Fall is the marquee season for bull reds. Summer is hot, humid and productive early. Winter fronts blow the water out of the marsh and concentrate fish in the deeper ponds.
