One coast, a thousand miles, the same problem

The Gulf of Mexico runs from the Lower Laguna Madre in south Texas around to the Florida Keys. Nine distinct fisheries, five states, and one thing every one of them shares: long days in open sun with no shade on the boat. That is the problem gulf coast fishing apparel has to solve before it solves anything else.

What actually matters

UPF 50+, and a rating that survives the wash

UPF 50+ blocks roughly 98 percent of ultraviolet light. A plain cotton t-shirt is closer to UPF 5, and drops further when it gets wet. The rating is the baseline, but where it comes from matters: a tight synthetic knit holds its rating, a chemical finish washes out over a season. More on that in what UPF 50+ actually means.

A hood, not just long sleeves

Necks and ears are where anglers burn, because they are the spots sunscreen sweats off first and the spots that catch reflected light coming up off the water. A hood solves both without you having to think about it.

Quick-dry over cotton, every time

You will get wet. Spray on the run, a hand in the livewell, a wade that went deeper than planned. Cotton stays wet all day. A performance knit is dry before you are back at the ramp.

Coverage for the hands

The backs of your hands are on a rod or a wheel in full sun for nine hours and almost nobody screens them properly. Sun gloves are the cheapest fix on this list.
