Making performance fabric last a season

Reeled In performance hoodie hanging on the beach beside rods

Performance fabric fails for boring reasons. Salt left in the fibres, a hot dryer, and fabric softener, in roughly that order. All three are avoidable and none of them take any real effort.

Rinse before you wash

Salt crystals are abrasive. Left in the weave they work at the fibres every time the shirt moves, and they hold moisture against the print. A cold rinse in the sink at the end of the day, before the shirt goes in the basket, does most of the work.

If the shirt has been in the sun with sunscreen on your neck, rinse sooner rather than later. Some chemical sunscreens will stain light fabric if they sit.

Cold wash, inside out, no softener

Wash cold, inside out, on a normal cycle. Inside out protects the print from abrasion against the drum and against everything else in the load.

Skip fabric softener entirely. It works by coating fibres, and a coated fibre does not wick. Softener is the single fastest way to turn a quick-dry shirt into a shirt that stays wet, and it can dull a printed logo at the same time.

Hang dry, always

Heat is what kills elastane and what lifts prints. A quick-dry fabric hung on a hanger is dry in under an hour anyway, so the dryer is buying you almost nothing and costing you the fit.

Hang it in shade. Drying a dark shirt in full Gulf sun every day will fade it faster than wearing it will.

Does washing cost you the UPF rating

It depends on where the rating comes from. A rating that comes from a tight synthetic knit is structural and stays put for the life of the shirt. A rating from a chemical finish applied to a looser fabric washes out over a season, which is one reason to care how a shirt earns its number rather than just what the number is.

The short version

  1. Cold rinse the same day, especially after salt.
  2. Wash cold and inside out.
  3. No fabric softener, ever.
  4. Hang dry in shade, never in a hot dryer.

Gear for it. Have a look at how a shirt earns its UPF rating, the performance hoodie or the size guide.
