Where the southern Gulf fisheries run, from Boca Grande to the Keys, and why long fights change what you want to be wearing.
A fishery with a hard geography
Tarpon and snook are the southern half of this coast. Texas gets them at the edges, Louisiana rarely, and from Tampa south they are the reason people book the trip. Boca Grande, the Ten Thousand Islands and the Keys are the centre of it.
Long fights, no shade
A tarpon fight can run half an hour. You do not get to step out of the sun in the middle of it, and you are not thinking about your neck while it is happening. This is the fishery where people come home burnt through a shirt they thought was enough.
Mangroves are hard on sleeves
Snook fishing means casting into cover and running boats through cuts. Fabric that snags and tears is a real cost, not a detail.
The season shapes the wardrobe
Peak tarpon is May through July, which is also peak UV. If you fish this window seriously, coverage stops being a preference.
