Biloxi fishing guide
Biloxi sits on the Mississippi Sound with Gulfport to the west and Ocean Springs across Biloxi Bay, and most of the fishing here is shallow, protected water. Locals work the Back Bay, Deer Island, the US 90 bridges and the coastal piers close to home, then run south to the grass beds at Cat Island and the other barrier islands, or west into the Biloxi Marsh when the wind blows. Past the islands, the state's artificial reefs, wrecks and rigs hold snapper, cobia and mackerel. The Sound is the difference here: you can catch fish most of the year without ever seeing open Gulf.

Speckled trout
Peak: April, May, June, October, November
In winter they stack in deep bay holes, river bends and the Biloxi Marsh, then from spring through mid August they spawn on the Cat Island grass beds and in fall they push back into the marsh.
Redfish
Peak: October, November, December
Fish the marsh edges and bayous on a rising tide in fall, the Back Bay and Deer Island flats in spring, and look for bull reds around the passes and bridges.
Flounder
Peak: September, October, November
In summer they hold on the rock jetties along casino row and get gigged at night off the beaches and islands, and in fall they move through the Sound and around the bridges.
Sheepshead
Peak: January, February, March
Fish the bridge pilings, like the US 90 bridge between Biloxi and Ocean Springs, plus the jetties and dock pilings from fall through spring.
Black drum
Peak: January, February, March
Bottom fish the bridges, channels and Point Cadet along the Back Bay in the cooler months, and big ones will come late in the afternoon on a moving tide.
Cobia
Peak: April, May
They show up in April, so run the sand bars, island points, ship channel buoys and markers, then fish the rigs, wrecks and reefs into summer.
Tripletail
Peak: August, September
Run the crab pot buoys in late summer and sight cast a live shrimp to fish laid up beside them.
Spanish mackerel
Peak: June, July, August
They are around the reefs and rigs in summer, and when they run the beaches in fall you can also catch them off the beach piers like Coliseum Pier.
King mackerel
Peak: July, August
Troll the offshore reefs and rigs south of the islands in summer.
Red snapper
Peak: June, July
Fish the artificial reefs, wrecks and rigs offshore, but only on open days, and before you go check that you have the state landing permit and that you've reported the trip through Tails n' Scales.

Fishing Biloxi, asked and answered
When is the best time to fish Biloxi for speckled trout?
Spring and early summer are strong, when trout move onto the Cat Island grass beds to spawn and stay into mid August. Fall is good again as they push back into the marsh, and in winter you'll find them in deep bay holes, river bends and the Biloxi Marsh.
Do I need a saltwater license to fish in Biloxi?
Yes, if you're 16 or older and fishing south of Highway 90. Between Highway 90 and I-10 a saltwater or freshwater license works. If you want to keep reef fish or cobia, everyone fishing on the boat also needs the MS-ROLP landing permit.
When is red snapper season in Mississippi in 2026?
The state season opened May 22, 2026, and closed July 5, 2026. MDMR reopened it on September 4, 2026, Friday through Sunday each week plus Monday, September 7, until the state catch limit is projected to be met. Check dmr.ms.gov/snapper before every trip, and report your trip through Tails n' Scales.
Where can I fish from shore or a pier in Biloxi?
Piers in town include the Old Biloxi/Ocean Springs drive-on fishing pier off Howard Avenue, Coliseum Pier on Beach Blvd. and the Forrest Avenue pier on the Back Bay. When Spanish mackerel run the beaches in fall you can catch them off the beach piers like Coliseum Pier.
What NOAA tide station should I use for Biloxi?
Use Biloxi (Cadet Point), station 8743735, for tide predictions. It does not report water temperature or wind, so check Pascagoula NOAA Lab, station 8741533, for water temperature, and the NWS Mississippi Sound forecast (GMZ532) for wind and seas.
