Crystal River fishing guide
Crystal River sits at the head of a first magnitude spring system, Kings Bay, a few miles up from the Gulf, and the run out to open water winds through the Salt River, Crystal River and the St. Martins Marsh and Big Bend seagrass preserves. Most fishing here is shallow: redfish and trout on grass, oyster bars and rocky flats, black drum and sheepshead in the creeks and rivers when it cools, tarpon in spring, and bay scallops in summer. Unlike St. Petersburg, the nearest existing guide, there are no big passes, bridges or deep bay, and the water falls under FWC's Big Bend rules for snook, redfish and trout instead of the Tampa Bay region.

Redfish
Peak: March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
Sight fish them on the shallow flats with a freelined live shrimp, and when cold fronts hit, look in the deeper holes of the rivers and creeks.
Spotted seatrout
Peak: April, May, June, July, August, September, October
Work 2 to 4 foot grass flats with a popping cork and a quarter ounce jighead with shrimp, and fish slower in deeper grass and around oyster bars as the water cools.
Tarpon
Peak: April, May
The county tourism board puts the main tarpon run in April and May, and the area is known for tarpon on fly.
Black drum
Peak: March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October
In cold weather they stack with reds and trout in the deeper river and creek holes, where shrimp on the bottom does the work.
Sheepshead
Peak: March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October
Local guides say they start showing up once the first cold fronts cool the water, so that is the time to work rocks, docks and pilings.
Mangrove snapper
Peak: March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
Shore anglers take them off the boardwalk and pier at Fort Island Trail Park, and boats find them on nearshore rocks.
Spanish mackerel
Peak: April, May, June, July, August, September, October
They show up along the mangrove shorelines from spring through fall, so keep a spoon or small jig rigged while you fish for reds.
Bay scallops
Peak: July, August, September
Harvest is by hand or dip net on the grass flats off Crystal River during the July 1 to Sept. 24 Citrus County season.
