Port Charlotte fishing guide
Port Charlotte wraps the north shore of upper Charlotte Harbor between the mouths of the Peace and Myakka rivers, with miles of residential canals in between. Locals fish the canals, bridges and river mouths for snook, redfish, juvenile tarpon, mangrove snapper and black drum, and run down the harbor to the flats and bars for trout and big reds. It is brackish, river-fed water, more canal and bridge fishing than the downtown seawalls and marina of Punta Gorda across the river.

Where can I launch a boat in Port Charlotte?
FWC lists ramps at the Port Charlotte Beach Complex, Spring Lake Park, El Jobean Park and South Gulf Cove Park, which charge a fee, and a free ramp at Butterford on Marathon Blvd. Harbour Heights Park and Darst Park put you on the Peace River.
Can I fish the Port Charlotte Beach pier or El Jobean pier?
Not right now. The local Fishin' Frank's report says the Port Charlotte Beach pier no longer exists and the El Jobean Bridge pier is closed for fire and hurricane damage. Spring Lake Park is still producing tarpon and snook.
When can I keep a snook in Port Charlotte?
Port Charlotte is in FWC's Charlotte Harbor region, where snook harvest is closed Dec. 1 through the end of February and May 1 through Sept. 30, so it is open in March, April, October and November. You need a snook permit too.
Where do locals catch fish in the fall?
The canals, the US 41 and I-75 bridges, Shell Creek and the Peace and Myakka river mouths give up snook, redfish, juvenile tarpon, mangrove snapper and black drum, and big reds gather on the harbor bars.
Where can I buy live bait in Port Charlotte?
Fishin' Frank's on US 41 sells live shrimp, crabs, fish and shiners, opens at 6 a.m. daily, and posts a weekly harbor report. Downtown Bait and Tackle sells live bait at the Laishley Marina ramp across the river in Punta Gorda.
