Sanibel fishing guide
Sanibel anglers fish the Gulf beaches from Lighthouse Beach to Bowman's, the fast water of Blind Pass between Sanibel and Captiva, the mangrove creeks and flats of the Ding Darling refuge and Tarpon Bay, and the big estuary of Pine Island Sound behind the islands. Snook, redfish, trout and snapper are around all year, tarpon migrate past from mid April into July, and Spanish mackerel and bluefish school off the beaches in fall. The islands are still coming back from Hurricane Ian: the Sanibel Fishing Pier has been closed since the storm, with a temporary repair aiming to reopen it in late 2026.

Snook
Peak: April, May, June, July
Surf snook cruise the Gulf beaches in summer, and Blind Pass and the mangrove points of the sound hold fish on moving tides; skip live shiners under the mangroves on high incoming water.
Redfish
Peak: September, October, November
Fall brings big reds to the Ding Darling shallows and schools to Pine Island Sound; cut ladyfish or a tail-hooked pinfish on wind-blown mangrove islands works.
Spotted seatrout
Popping corks and live shrimp across the grass flats, and live shrimp in the beach troughs in winter.
Tarpon
Peak: May, June
The migration runs from mid April well into July, fished off the east end of Sanibel, along the beaches and in the back bay.
Spanish mackerel
Peak: October, November
Fall schools push close to the beaches; cast spoons and jigs where birds are working.
Pompano
Peak: March, April, October, November
Bright jigs bounced on the bottom along the surf and at Blind Pass, and corks over the grass flats in the sound.
Sheepshead
Peak: January, February, March, December
Shrimp around the causeway bridges, Ding Darling culverts and Blind Pass rocks in the cool months.
Mangrove snapper
Free-lined shrimp around the causeway, Blind Pass and refuge culverts, with the most consistent bite in winter.
King mackerel
Spring and fall fish in the nearshore Gulf off the islands.
Tripletail
Sight-cast free-lined shrimp to fish under crab trap buoys in Pine Island Sound.
