An August morning on Galveston Bay is flat and pleasant at six and genuinely punishing by nine. The temperature is not what gets people. It is the humidity sitting on top of it, which is why the usual advice about wearing less is exactly wrong here.
Heat index, not temperature
Ninety two degrees at eighty five percent humidity feels like well over a hundred, because sweat is your cooling system and sweat only cools you when it evaporates. On the upper coast in August the air is already close to holding as much water as it can, so it evaporates slowly and you just stay wet.
That is why a cotton t-shirt is the worst thing you can wear out here. It soaks, it stays soaked, and a wet cotton shirt sitting against your skin in still air does nothing except get heavier.
Why more fabric feels cooler
A loose long sleeve in a light performance knit is cooler than bare skin in direct sun, which sounds wrong until you have done it. The fabric blocks the radiant load, it wicks the sweat out to a surface where air can reach it, and it keeps moving air against you rather than against a burn.
The one condition is that it has to be a knit built to dry. The same shirt in cotton is worse than nothing.
The bay is brown and busy
Sabine, Galveston and Matagorda are big working systems: marsh drains, shell pads and the edges of ship channels, usually in enough chop to throw spray the whole run. You get wet on the way out whether or not you get wet fishing.
That is the other half of the case for quick-dry. A shirt that is dry again by the second drift is the difference between a comfortable morning and a miserable one, and the run back at eleven with a wet shirt and a headwind is where people actually get cold in August.
Fish early, and dress for the whole window
Spring and fall are the tournament months here for a reason. In summer the fishing is front loaded, so the plan is usually launch in the dark, work the first two hours hard, and be off the water before the worst of it.
Dress for eleven o'clock, not for six. The temperature at the ramp is the least relevant number in the forecast.
