This stretch of coast fishes two completely different ways in one day. Specks and reds in the Mississippi Sound or Mobile Bay in the morning, then a run past Dauphin Island or out of Orange Beach where the water changes colour and the spread goes out. Most people dress for the first half.
Inshore is humid, offshore is exposed
In the sound you are in a working, sheltered, humid system: barge traffic, brown water, not much breeze between the islands. Out past the barrier islands the humidity drops, the breeze picks up and it feels cooler, which is the trap. Feeling cooler is not the same as getting less sun.
The offshore leg is where the real damage is done, because it is four hours of open water with no bimini over the transom and a surface reflecting the whole sky back at you.
The one layer that does both
A hooded UPF 50+ knit works inshore because it breathes and dries, and works offshore because it covers. That is the whole argument for buying one good shirt rather than a bay shirt and an offshore shirt.
The detail that matters is the collar. Trolling means facing away from the boat's shade for long stretches, and a high collar or a hood is the only thing between the sun and the back of your neck out there.
Seasons, and what changes
Spring pushes the specks shallow, summer is the offshore stretch, and fall is the best all round window on this coast. Winter fishing here is real, but it is a slower, more technical game and the layering question changes completely.
Tripletail around the buoys and Spanish mackerel on the troll are the two that most often turn a planned inshore morning into an unplanned offshore afternoon.
Pack for the leg you did not plan
The number of trips out here that grow a second half is high enough that it is worth dressing for it every time. A dry shirt in a bag and a hat that stays on at speed cover most of what goes wrong.
