Cape Coral fishing guide

Cape Coral sits on the west bank of the lower Caloosahatchee River, with Matlacha Pass on its western edge and the east flats of Charlotte Harbor off its northwest corner. Where the Fort Myers guide is built around Sanibel and Pine Island Sound, Cape Coral is a launch-from-the-river town: the city ramps at Rosen and Horton parks put you on the Caloosahatchee about 11 miles from the Sanibel Causeway, the river holds tarpon year-round, and two trails in the northwest Cape lead to wade fishing for trout on the Charlotte Harbor flats. The freshwater canals add largemouth bass and Mayan cichlids, while the Yacht Club pier is still closed from Hurricane Ian.

Fishing Cape Coral, asked and answered

Where can I launch a boat in Cape Coral?

The city runs improved saltwater ramps at Rosen Park and Horton Park on the Caloosahatchee, plus Burnt Store and the BMX ramp. Trailer parking is $15 a day through the Passport Parking app, or residents can buy an annual decal. Lee County's Matlacha ramp on Pine Island Road is another option for Matlacha Pass.

Is the Cape Coral Yacht Club pier open?

No. The Yacht Club Community Park beach on Driftwood Parkway is open and allows shore fishing on the river, but the pier remains closed from Hurricane Ian damage.

Can I fish Cape Coral without a boat?

Yes. Two trails in Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, the North Cape Flats Trail and Fishing Access 4, lead to wade fishing for trout on the Charlotte Harbor flats, and the Yacht Club beach allows shore fishing on the river. The freshwater canals also hold bass and cichlids.

When can I keep a snook around Cape Coral?

Cape Coral is in FWC's Charlotte Harbor snook region, where harvest is closed Dec. 1 through February and May 1 through Sept. 30. That leaves March, April, October and November, and you need a snook permit with your saltwater license.

When is the best tarpon fishing near Cape Coral?

The big migration peaks April through June, but the Caloosahatchee holds adult tarpon year-round and the backwaters hold juveniles all year.
