Cypremort Point fishing guide

Cypremort Point is a camp and sailboat community on a peninsula in Vermilion Bay, one of the few spots near the Gulf you can drive to between Grand Isle and Cameron. Locals fish The Cove and Weeks Bay shorelines for speckled trout in fall, the reefs around Marsh Island and Southwest Pass for redfish, and run out past Marsh Island to the Gulf for tripletail off floating debris. What sets it apart from Cocodrie, the nearest guide to the east, is the Atchafalaya River: when the river is high the bay goes fresh and muddy, trout scatter and redfish carry the fishing, and when it drops and salt water returns the trout bite turns on.

80 ft, asked and answered

Fishing Cypremort Point, asked and answered

When is the best time to fish Cypremort Point for speckled trout?

October is the month locals count on, with November also strong, fishing live shrimp under a popping cork at Tee Butte, Pavy's Reef, The Hammock and The Cove. Strong winter fronts push most trout out to the Gulf until spring.

Why does the Atchafalaya River matter for fishing here?

A high Atchafalaya sends fresh, dirty water into Vermilion Bay, which shuts down the trout but keeps redfish biting around Marsh Island and Southwest Pass. Once the river drops and salt water returns, the trout spots around The Cove, Tee Butte and Pavy's Reef turn on.

Where do I find redfish at Cypremort Point in winter?

Winter is the best redfish time, with fish up on the Vermilion Bay and Weeks Bay shorelines in 3 feet or less. Work the mud shorelines with a soft plastic on a quarter-ounce jighead.

Can I fish Cypremort Point without a boat?

Yes. Cypremort Point State Park has shore fishing areas (a park entry fee applies), and flounder show up around the park piers in the warmer months.
